The growing season has slowed, but this is the best time to get organised. A clean, sharp set of tools and a tidy garden will make spring far easier. This week's all about maintenance and preparation.

Tools, Pruning and Cleanup

Tidying now reduces pests and disease pressure later. It also extends the life of your tools and makes pruning cuts cleaner and safer.

This week's key tasks:

  • Clean, sharpen, and oil shears, secateurs, and spades.
  • Prune dead or diseased wood from trees and shrubs.
  • Remove rotting leaves and stems from beds to prevent mould.
  • Empty old containers, scrub them, and store them dry.

Pro Tip

Use sand mixed with a little oil in a bucket to store small tools over winter. Each time you push the blades in, it cleans and coats them against rust.

Your Gardening Questions Answered

Q: Can I prune roses now or wait until spring?

A: Light prune now to remove dead or crossing wood, then do major shaping in late winter once the worst frosts have passed.

Free Insulation From the Garden

This Week's Tip

Use leftover autumn leaves as instant insulation. Pile them over your compost bin or around stored pots to keep them from freezing.
