The way you pick can make or break your plant's productivity. Here's how to do it right.

Want More From Your Crops? It's All in How You Harvest

Years ago, I used to harvest like I was on a mission — pull everything off, tidy up the plants, and move on. But I started noticing something: some plants did not bounce back, and others just stopped producing altogether.

Turns out, how you harvest matters just as much as when.

August is still full of life in the garden, and if you harvest smart now, you can keep your plants producing well into September and beyond. So let us talk about how to pick in a way that encourages regrowth, prevents stress, and actually improves flavour and shelf life.

This Week's Tip: Harvesting for Health, Regrowth & Flavour

Here is what I have learned over the years that makes all the difference:

Harvest in the morning Plants are fully hydrated and sugars are at their peak. That means better taste and longer shelf life.
Use clean, sharp tools A clean cut heals faster and reduces disease risk. I keep a small blade in my back pocket just for this.
Pick regularly Beans, cucumbers, courgettes — the more you pick, the more they produce. Leaving mature fruits on tells the plant its job is done.
Cut, don't rip For leafy crops like spinach, chard, or basil, use scissors or snips. Ripping stresses the plant and damages the crown.
Leave the heart intact For cut-and-come-again crops like lettuce, harvest outer leaves and leave the centre. It will regrow in no time.
And don't forget

Harvest with intention. Pause, enjoy the moment. That is part of what makes gardening so grounding. The harvest is the reward for all of it.

This is exactly how I harvest in my own garden. Once you get into the rhythm, you will notice the difference almost immediately. It is not just what you grow — it is how and when you pick it.
