Spring's really rolling now, and your garden's ready for quick crops. Early salads grow fast, taste sweet, and make you feel like the season's begun. This week, we'll get your first trays and beds of fresh greens underway.

Early Salad and Cut Greens

Early salads are the most rewarding crops you can grow. With the right timing, you'll harvest fresh leaves within weeks and keep them coming right through summer.

This week's key tasks:

  • Sow fast growers like lettuce, rocket, and spinach under cover or in containers.
  • Keep compost evenly moist -- never let seedlings dry out.
  • Harvest outer leaves regularly to encourage regrowth.
  • Sow new trays every two weeks to keep the supply constant.

Pro Tip

Mix varieties with different textures and colours. A blend of butterhead, oakleaf, and mizuna makes your salad bowl look and taste better.

Your Gardening Questions Answered

Q: Can I reuse compost for salad trays?

A: Yes, but mix in one-third fresh compost or worm castings to replace nutrients. Used compost alone tends to compact and limit root growth.

A Spray Bottle Changes Everything

This Week's Tip

Keep a spray bottle of water near your salad trays. A fine mist each morning keeps leaves crisp and reduces slug interest.
